Allen Slater- Flathead Community Band Music Director

Matt King - DirectorA Miles City Montana native, Allen Slater is the director of bands and the music department chairman at Flathead High School.  Mr. Slater earned his bachelor of Music Education from the University of Montana and a Masters of Music Education from Vandercook College in Chicago.

Mr. Slater is a member of the American School Band Directors Association, the National Bandmasters Association, and a charter member of Montana chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Slater is a past –president of the Montana Bandmasters Association, past State Manager for the Montana Music Educators Association, active in multiple state and professional committees, and helped to write Montana’s state standards for the arts. He is a member

During the summer of 2001, Mr. Slater was selected as a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar and spent three weeks in Japan with other U.S. Educators studying the Japanese culture and educational system.  In 2007 he was listed in BOC magazine as one of 50 directors that make a difference. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who amongst teachers. In 2013 he was recognized by the National Federation of High Schools as the Outstanding Music Educator for sections 8, (Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Alaska and Montana).  He has appeared as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator at events in Montana and Washington.

In addition to music, Mr. Slater enjoys golf and woodworking.   


 

Matt King-Music Director 2011 - 2013

Matt King - DirectorOriginally hailing from the state of New York, Matthew King conducted the Director of the FVCB, as well as the Director of Bands at Stillwater Christian School in Kalispell, Montana.  Under his directorship at Stillwater, Matthew has the entire band program ranging from 4th grade to 12th grade, including 8 ensembles.   

Matthew received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Anderson University in central Indiana, and is an active tuba player.  He played with the Glacier Symphony, Brasswerks, and Bavarian Echoes. Matthew has also been featured with the Don Lawrence Orchestra.

At Stillwater, Matthew co-directs the Stillwater Music Festival held at the school yearly, and has taken his High School groups to music festivals in the region, including the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival.  About one half of the High School is enrolled in band at Stillwater.

During his time outside of music, Matthew enjoys spending quality time with his wife, reading, hiking, and the Ohio State Buckeyes.


 

Hank Handford - Music Director 2004-2010

Hank Handford Conductor

A Kalispell native, Hank Handford assumed directorship of the FVCB in 2004. Mr. Handford received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Montana State University, Bozeman, and is an active trombonist.

He is currently director of bands at Kalispell Jr. High School and performs locally with the Glacier Symphony, the Don Lawrence Orchestra, and the Bavarian Echoes.

He is also co-director of the Flathead Lake Music Camp. In 2003, he traveled to Germany and Austria with the Montana Trombone Chorale.

In his spare time, Mr. Handford enjoys movies, cooking and brewing beer.

Don Lawrence Director EmeritusDirector Emeritus--Don Lawrence: A living Montana musical leDon Lawrencegend, Don Lawrence was born in Loomis, SD on Dec. 27, 1929. He graduated from Flathead County High School in 1947, and received his B.A. in Music from the University of Montana. In 1975 he was awarded the Master of Music Degree from University of Idaho. Mr. Lawrence directed the high school bands in Columbia Falls, MT until his retirement in 1984. He was Director of the Flathead Valley Community Band from 1972 to 1997, and continues to play trombone in the band. An avid composer, Mr. Lawrence has also contributed at least two original compositions to the band's library. He leads the Bavarian Echoes German band, and the Don Lawrence Orchestra. He resides in Columbia Falls with wife Barbara.
